$205,000 back into the Playford Community
More than $205,000 in funding grants is being invested in the local Playford community as part of the first round of the Playford Alive Initiatives Fund.
The Fund was established to initiate and sustain initiatives that are going to see a real improvement in opportunities for residents living within South Australia’s largest urban renewal project area.
Northern Suburbs Minister Jennifer Rankine said people in the northern suburbs community will be able to access the fund to support community activities, volunteering and participation in community life.
“The fund will receive 1% of the price of sales from land sold over the 15 year life of the Playford Alive project and is expected to deliver considerable community benefits.The change in the Playford Alive area is unfolding at a rapid pace and our Government wants the community benefit from the remarkable investment in the area”, Ms Rankine said.
“The fund will support sport and recreation opportunities in the region, as well as help to build on existing crime prevention and safety programs”, Ms Rankine said.
Over the life of the project the Fund will provide around $4-5 million dollars for community initiatives.
City of Playford Mayor Martin Lindsell announced the first round of allocations from the Fund, and said the major beneficiary would be programs that provide employment opportunities for young people in the project area with two grants in the category of Pathways to Employment.
$50,000 grant to the Housing Industry Association Youth Build Playford Alive which is a vocational training program leading to full-time apprenticeships in the building and construction industry.$30,000 grant to Youthinc Incorporated. It will go towards Playford 50, an employment and personal development program for 50 young people.The Fund Management Board assesses and determines applications, and was chaired by Mr Lindsell, who said: ‘It has been such a rewarding experience to chair the Board and be able to support organisations that will deliver fantastic projects to the local community.
“As a Board, we were pleasantly surprised with the number and variety of projects put forward and had an extremely challenging task in assessing the diverse applications”, Mr Lindsell said. “We’re confident the chosen projects will make a positive contribution to the local community”.
In the category of Community Development and Integration,
- The Smith Family received $29,730 towards meeting specific literacy needs in the community;
- Burundian community groups receive three small grants totalling $11,200 towards their Multicultural Independence Day Celebration,
- the Voice of Peace Choir and Black Aussie Stars, which aim to break down barriers through music.
- Two over-50s clubs – Smithfield and Coo-Inda – benefit in the Provision of Equipment (Community Groups) category while netball and rugby union clubs benefit in the same category, but for Sporting Equipment.
