Environment
Environmental sustainability is a signature of the Playford Alive project. Northern Adelaide is recognised internationally for innovation in developing sustainable approaches to water and energy use – and Playford Alive will build on this proud reputation.
Playford Alive’s grid pattern of streets is aligned to the north in order to achieve best practice in energy efficiency. Well-planned street layouts will conveniently link homes to shops, transport hubs, schools, recreational areas and key community facilities. These have been designed to make it easy for residents to walk from place to place, promoting healthy lifestyles and cutting fuel costs and car pollution.
Every new home and refurbished home at Playford Alive will meet Ecologically Sustainable Development and energy efficiency benchmarks.
Urban wetlands will capture stormwater which is then cleansed and distributed through a network of community bores for the irrigation of parks and reserves. To reduce household water usage to all new homes in Playford Alive, properties are proposed to be connected to a treated recycled water system – in addition to the normal mains water supply – allowing treated stormwater and household water to be recycled through separate purple pipes and used again to flush toilets and water gardens.
